Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
